(Beijing, China)

A city of lengthy boulevards and a maze of highways, Beijing can be a little overwhelming at first, although beneath the surface of this vast metropolis is a very tourist-friendly location. Four individual ring roads encompass the city of Beijing, with the 'Forbidden City' lying in the very centre and being one of ten main districts.

Within the city's north-eastern suburbs, the Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) has become the busiest and most important airport in the whole of China. Serving in excess of 48 million travellers every year, Beijing Airport dates back to 1958 and is connected to the city by a fast expressway.

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) Maps: Important City Districts
An important area of commerce and industry, Beijing's Chao Yang neighbourhood also features plenty of attractions for tourists visiting the city, with highlights including Chao Yang Park and the many nightclubs and bars concentrated in the San Li Tun area. Nearby, the Jian Guo Men Wai and Ri Tan areas of Beijing are home to a selection of top luxury hotels and important offices, together with the Ri Tan Park and many local shops.

One of the most appealing and up-and-coming parks in Beijing, Chao Yang Park offers a good selection of dining options, while the Chong Wen area is known for its extensive shopping opportunities around Qian Men and stunning Temple of Heaven park, which dates back to the beginning of the 15th century.

Home of the world-famous Tiananmen Square, the Dong Cheng district of Beijing has become a popular tourist hotspot and as a result, visitors are well catered for, with plenty of shops and eateries to go around, especially in the Wang Fu Jing area. Many of the city's best shops can be found here, with Wang Fu Jing being well pedestrianised and always busy.

The city's university district lies to the north-west of the city centre and contains many important university buildings. With a high concentration of students living in this part of Beijing, it will come as no surprise that the area really comes alive at night, with an extensive choice of inexpensive places to eat out.
